Valentine's Day Questions...

What to ask instead of "how many cards did you get?"...

This is the question most students hate to be asked, apart from that one girl (or guy) who you know will have received a bunch of cards, by the way they ask every other person in their class/school/world this very question: "how many valentines cards did YOU get?" hoping that the question will be turned back to them so they can gleefully tell you their (possibly) exaggerated sum.

So what about when you are doing your detached, hanging around work in schools tomorrow and valentine's is in the air and you are tempted to join in with "so, how many cards did everyone get today?"... take a moment to think about the majority of students for whom that number will be zero and feeling less than wonderful about themselves.

Here's some questions/areas you might embrace instead:

- "Next week is half term (whoop) - what is something you're looking forward to about that?"

- "What's the craziest thing you've seen at the winter olympics so far? I watched this guy to a triple summersault on skis yesterday.."… have you ever skied? Fancy your chances at 2018??!"

- "Some people are talking about Valentine's Day today.. did you know this day was named after a Christian saint who was put in prison for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry? While he was in prison - as legend goes - he healed the daughter of his jailer, and before his execution sent her a letter which he signed 'Your Valentine'. This apparently was the first Valentine's note ever sent"

- "Who do you know that will struggle with Valentine's Day today? How about sending them a nice message on Facebook or leaving a fun positive note about themselves in their school bag?"
