Summer Madness

Kieran Murphy (Director of Phase), and I are off to spread the word about Schoolswork.co.uk in Belfast tomorrow at the Summer Madness festival. We've been invited to lead a storytelling workshop, so if you're there and that's your bag do come and see us - if you can tear yourself away from the brilliant Andy Hickford that is! It's such an honour to be asked and we're looking forward to meeting our Northern Irish counterparts and seeing what's going on over the water!image

Why?

At LCET recently it's felt like really hard work to get young people to attend the cafes and clubs we're putting on and we're starting to ask why? Is it something we're doing wrong? Is it a change in youth culture? Does God have new plans for our ministry? What's it all about? We had an opportunity to pick the brains of Brian McLaren and Gerard Kelly and see if they had any light to shed…we'd also love to hear from you!image

Saving Private Ryan?

FilmClub is the brainchild of Lindsay Mackie and Beeban Kidron, the filmmaker who wisely remarked that "stories and the telling of stories is the foundation of human communication and understanding ... and I think that if ... kids all over the country are watching films and asking questions, then the world will eventually be a better place."

We all know the value of storytelling in learning. Now there is the opportunity to give pupils access to perhaps the best way of telling stories available - through the ambitious alchemy of image, movement, sound, music, dialogue, space, light and shade that is cinema. Film is, after all, an important part of any meaningful literacy in the 21st century.

I've just come across information on this rather wonderful week coming up in June. It's all about exploring identity, diversity and citizenship. Running from the 23rd-28th June, it is an educational programme that encourages children and young people to explore these things in themselves, their local communities and nationally. It's a great site and has resources for teachers, ideas and a section for young people too.

Vox Pops coming soon

Do you use vox pops in your work? Do you find you have very little time to put together what you want?
Well I'm to help make your life a little easier, and would like to find out what you'd find useful. I'm spending a bit of time with the schoolswork.co.uk gang in Luton for the next few weeks, and one of my tasks is to get together some vox pops for the site, interviewing people around and about on different issues and questions...

I've found a great vid that I think would work really well as a conversation starter.

The advice? turn down. switch off. recycle. walk.
