Jesus and Music

Thursday 3rd Jul, 2008 in: Community Blog by Matt Lilley

Part of the R.E syllabus is to see how Jesus is portrayed through art.  I decided to do a lesson through the art medium of Music.  The lesson uses various types of music and really gets the young people thinking and discussing how people view and describe Jesus.

The Fray’s latest album is released today. Why does this information warrant a posting on schoolswork.co.uk? They have a great song called ‘You Found Me’...not only are the lyrics very powerful and will connect with a lot of young people, Isaac Slade (lead singer and pianist) speaks about the reasons behind this song in a way that will open up some great conversations about faith with young people. In an interview with USA Weekend, Isaac answered this question: “How do faith and pop music intersect for you?

Faith is hard to talk about, but for me there is a coherency that I find in faith. There is a pull toward living and believing the same thing. There is no room for thinking one thing and then living another.

Interview with Isaac Slade

Following my last post, have been reading up more about the Fray and found this amazing interview from a few years ago by lead singer Isaac. He speaks very refreshingly about the band’s move into the secular music market. The vocabulary he used to use in his Christian songs, he remembers, had no way of connecting with his non-Christian friends…he compares it to his job in Starbucks: “If I handed somebody a double grande mocha latte and told them, ‘Jesus loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life,’ they might throw it back on me.”  Worth a read!
