A collection of stuff that's humourous, weird or just interesting. Some of it may be useful for working in schools and the rest is just for fun.
Virtual Barber Shop
This is amazing. Grab some earphones (doesn’t work without them) and get ready for a surreal experience. Make sure you shut your eyes!
Purely for fun, although would love to see how this kind of sound recording could be used as a sound effect in an assembly…
Awareness Test
Road safety awareness advert. Fun to use as is or built into a talk/lesson on seeing but not seeing…
World Beard Championships
How I wish I could think of a good reason to include this in a lesson or assembly. I’m working on it. In the meantime, enjoy some of the best beards in the world. My favourite? These sideburns from Eduardo in Mexico are to die for.
The 10 most amazing sand sculptures in the world
As a kid you probably enjoyed making sandcastles on the beach but did you ever think sandcastles could be so big, so elaborate or intricate? These sand sculptures are typically made using river sand, which is a finer material when compared with beach sand and therefore more suited to being sculpted. Unlike your puny childhood attempt at sand castle glory, some of these oversized sandcastles withstand weeks of erosion before disappearing. The results are impressive to say the least… and might give a different twist to an assembly or lesson on the parable of the house built on the sand!
Binocular Soccer
It’s hard not to love this crazy version of football, with each player only being able to see through a pair of binoculars strapped to their face. I have this down as a game for a summer camp this year, though I’d love to arrange a match one lunchtime at school. How about teachers playing in teams with each other: since the real fun is in watching. Looking online you can find binoculars for as little as £5 and even some strap-on ones as used in the match. Magic!
How NOT to use Powerpoint
Don McMillan gives a short comedy sketch around powerpoint presentations and the common mistakes that people make. Apart from being very funny, it’s a useful reminder for anyone taking a lesson or assembly.
The Cartoon Church
http://www.cartoonchurch.com
A wealth of Christian cartoons with a small licence fee if you want to reproduce them or use them in your work.
Jib Jab
http://www.jibjab.com/starring_you
This is fantastic! Upload a photo of yourself (or anyone else) and you can create movies in which you dance the can-can or do the hula. Would make a great item for a school assembly.
Noisegames
http://www.noisegames.com
A collection on online games that all involve noise in some way. There’s some great stuff here including games where you can play around with electric guitars and drums. there’s even a drumming dog? Some good ideas here for competitions you could run in a lunchtime group.
Prayerfeeder
http://www.prayerfeeder.com
A brilliant idea. You set up a prayer network and the things you’d like people to pray for, and then invite family, friends or anyone else to join your network. Their prayers will automatically be added to your prayerfeed.
Asbo Jesus
http://asbojesus.wordpress.com
Jon Birch’s brilliant cartoons that have a way of digging at our prejudices and assumptions about life and faith.
