Transition to Secondary
Does anyone have any great ideas for helping children move on from Primary to Secondary schools? I’m currently using the SU book It’s Your Move and want to look at the story of Daniel as an example. I need some ideas for activities e.g. role play, games, crafts, reflection etc.

We use ‘It’s Your Move’. We tend to do it as a team so they know who the secondary schools worker is before they get to the school. Then the primary schools worker comes in on some of my yr7 assemblies in September time too. I’ve done an assembly on Daniel before where my colleague encouraged the teens with the promise of life long chocolate to all take the mickey out of me and laugh at me. (they all do it- i think they would without the promise of chocolate!!) we told a story of joining in with laughing at people and the reflection was along the lines of - I bet you have all been laughed at and I bet you have all laughed at people.
Hi we do a two hour session for transition working with Andy from Christians in schools Trust, Stockport. Contact me if you’d like more details.
If your schools are doing a transition programme then it’s worth trying to get involved throughout the year. That might give you more opportunities to use things like ‘It’s Your Move’. We gave each young person a copy as a gift/keepsake from the local churches, acknowledging their support as they face a big change.
I do an hour’s workshop with each school we give the books to, and it’s about them exploring their feelings about moving up. We do graffitti walls on what they’re looking forward to, what they are dreading, and what they will miss from primary.
I also take some year 7s to tell them what it is really like. This has always been the most popular bit, with loads of questions being asked.
Hope that helps,
Andrea
We arrange assemblies in all 14 primaries and hand out It’s Your Move (1500). Some schools see it as just an assembly others build on this after we leave.
One school, the head writes each childs name in the booklet and we hand them out in person after assembly, they appreciate this personal touch.
During the assemblies we also have team members from our Secondary team and tell the year six’s to look out for them in their ‘new’ school. This is a great way of providing continuous spiritual care throughout the key stages (I had to use that phrase cause we love it, sorry)
