labyrinth for secondary school christmas

Tuesday 11th Nov, 2008 in: Secondary by tom w

I’m looking to run a labyrinth as a Christmas event this year. I want to open it up as a resource for RE classes to use. 2 bits of advice needed:

1-How do you think I should talk about it to the school - they are open to Christian input (I am the school chaplain) but are not keen on any sort of mass Christian observance.

2-Does anybody have experiences with labyrinth or prayer rooms in schools. How best can I set it up so that a class can find it useful?

Hi,
A Labyrinth is a really good way to have none threatening input in a school as young people get out of what they want and all connect with God in different ways. some will enjoy it simple because it’s fun to walk a maze type thing and others will find deep spiritual connection.

there are various types of labyrinth you can use.

1. the basic and least work. is to lay out a labyrinth walk on the grass or in a hall, either the circle design from Chatres or the more modern square contemporary style. the main difference of how they work is the circle style have an path leading tot he centre and then you have to turn round and come out which can cause some traffic jam issues. the contemorary style still has an importance of the centre but you go through it and so never retrace your steps.

2. There is a kit pack you can buy to run a contemporary labyrinth with 10 activity station to help people engage with different aspects of Christian spirituality. this can be very powerful, but may be some work in setting up. and come with a CD for each person to listen to to have there own personal zoned in journey providing you have portable CD players or all to use.

3. i have written a Christmas labyrinth, which fits into the contemporary style of 10 stations. it’s probably not as much setting up as the comtemporary kit but it is a case of finding a few things.  this also comes with a CD, the tracks include readings and thoughts about the Christmas story and the whole labyrinth covers advents through to epiphany with Chrsitmas day being in the centre.

i hope this helps if you would like more information then please ask.
