Fair Trade Ethical Things

Monday 21st Jan, 2008 in: Primary, Secondary, 16+ by Jane

Howies is a clothes shop dedicated to using fair trade and organic materials. Some of the stuff is really worth a look and the website has some helpful resources (pictures and poems mainly) for those of you wanting to promote ethical living. Here’s the link: http://www.howies.co.uk.

Howies is great but recently whilst preparing for a sixth form conference on fair trade, they (howies) informed me that they encouraged ethical practices but were NOT a fair trade company!

My understanding of Howies is that they are not an offical fair trade complany because they don’t think that there are a trusted set of guidlines to follow to be fairly traded, but in their endeavour to be ethical they try to be fairly traded. This page on their website explains what they are trying to do in relation to ethical and fair trading.

Having looked into Howies a little bit, it seems their take is about making every decision as ethically as possible, taking the lesser evil if you like. Which poses a really interesting concept to explore with young people of what we do when their isn’t an obvious ‘right’ answer, but a range a answers each with their own less than ideal ramifications.
