Blood, Sweat and T-shirts

Thursday 24th Apr, 2008 in: 16+ by emtron

New series ‘Blood, Sweat and T-Shirts’ is a great new series on BBC 3 shown on Monday nights (also available on BBC iplayer).  It’s a ‘reality’ show which takes 6 British teenagers/young people to work in Indian clothing factories.

A real eye opener for the teenagers involved, and for the audience that views it.  Currently watching the first ep on iplayer as I type and it’s shapin up pretty well.

Hopefully it will be shocking enough to change a few shopping habits or at least get people to think.

Great link thanks. I looked this up on iplayer and it came with a warning about strong language, so take Em’s advice about using this with the 16+ age group and be aware of the language. good find!

I’ve been watchin this series, think it’s a great way of highlighting the issue of fair trade & where our clothes come from particularly with older teens.
I find it both interesting and frustrating, particularly the second episode. One of the lads has no respect for another culture & his attitude makes me cringe. However, I am glad it came to a head (although it made me cringe watching the arguement with the local) and highlights another issue of respecting other cultures & how priviledged we are to live the way that we do.
I really recommend watching this series. In general BBC3 has some good reality style documentaries on at the moment, well worth keeping your eyes open for.

To know that big companies are exploiting third world countries like this makes me feel sick in my spirit. I recently went to India on mission and it certainly changed my life. Does anyone know of an organisation I can contact who is against all this?

loads - ethical threads might have links on their website, fairtrade foundation, ifat, ethical superstore has a load of links too. there are a couple of magazines that are good - ethical consumer and new consumer.

would be good to contact the World Development Movement too they lobby for loads of good stuff.

there’s stuff linked with tear fund too. campaign called lift the label or behind the label.

my new thing now is to go in shops, browse for ages and ask if they have fair trade ( or ask to speak to the manager). If they don’t i tell them i cant buy there, but it is a good way to explain what it is about - i am shocked how many people in retail don’t know.

Some shops stock it but don’t really promote it. Found some stuff in Next last week. Monsoon is really good cos they have ethical stuff and also a good policy generally.

There are great companies which sell fair trade stuff which also provide info on the processes and people who make the stuff - it’s really good to use for case studies
a few to try are
http://www.justtrade.co.uk
people tree
gossypium
greenfibres
no sweat
traidcraft

all the best - you can email me for more info too...been doing a series on this kind of thing for chapel so as a team we have quite a lot of good stuff.
