Just to confirm - that interview and feature was from the OCTOBER issue of youthwork magazine - the one with the music front cover. The upcoming November issue features a review of the short film by Chris Curtis

hi Louise,
I don’t know if this is the one you’re thinking of but there’s a film out called ‘Christian’ that will be featured in the next Youthwork magazine...Tom Wade mentioned it on another comment a few days ago, he wrote: “I came across a good 20 minute short film called ‘Christian’ the other day however by Hollywood screenwriter Stuart Hazeldine. ‘Christian’ is a retelling of the story of Jesus in a tough modern day secondary school - and is definately worth seeking out. Youthwork magazine has an interview with Stuart this month on pg10 and it is worth looking out for.”
hope that helps,
Amy

The amount of news covering knife crime is just enormous at the moment.  My local paper’s new section has so much about knife crime they should call it the knife crime section.

See this for example…

http://www.sundaymercury.net/news/crime-news/2008/09/23/co-op-ends-knife-sales-66331-21879157/

Is knife crime really such a big problem?

This sounds geat and just what we need, how do we get hold of the resources please? x

It’s BRILL!

By Khera Missen on SchoolsLive is launched

this site is brill. its helping me with my dissertation on secondary school assemblies and the development of spirituality, and has loads of resources for use at all levels and in all areas. well done!

By trudi oliver on 500 race!

I’ve been teaching happiness for a couple of years now. I did some research on the topic and discovered that one of the key ingredients of happiness is ‘meaning’. i.e. people who believe there is a meaning of life are generally happier than those who don’t. I then put together a series of 3 lessons: an intro, self image, meaning. I asked the head of PSHE if she was interested and she was. Although the teaching is mainly secular there is some talk about spirituality and Christianity in the meaning lesson. I have found this is one of the best resources I’ve ever used because it’s current, ticks all the right boxes and even slides in some spiritual talk.

Earlier on this post I said i’d let you know if i successfully used it, and i have!

I used it in a lesson on Why People Believe In God together with the poem ‘Where is God?’ (from the recent schoolswork.co.uk email) and got the year 10 class to think about why the authors believe in God. I then asked them about their views on God before explaining why I am a Christian.

It worked ok, I would definitely refine it next time to make the aim of the activity extra-clear, especially as it was a compulsory GCSE Short Course group so half of the class wanted to be anywhere but in RE!

It was also important to make sure they all realised that I think some different things about God than the two authors.

thanks very much for the ideas :) , I will put them to good use

you could do a combination of different quizzes to introduce the topic, e.g. drugs quiz : true or false handout sheet; drugs wordsearch sheet ; drug annagrams . I would also include some facts about drugs and then I would use a testimony of an ex drug user (maybe there is a Christian in your local area or a DVD film clip of an ex-drug user).

Hope that helps

Summer Madness

Sunday 29th Jun, 2008 in: Secondary by Lillie Jenkins

Kieran Murphy (Director of Phase), and I are off to spread the word about Schoolswork.co.uk in Belfast tomorrow at the Summer Madness festival. We’ve been invited to lead a storytelling workshop, so if you’re there and that’s your bag do come and see us - if you can tear yourself away from the brilliant Andy Hickford that is! It’s such an honour to be asked and we’re looking forward to meeting our Northern Irish counterparts and seeing what’s going on over the water!image

Disarming Britain

Tuesday 24th Jun, 2008 in: Other by Tom Wade

A gun and knife crime season on Channel 4 is starting on Monday 30 June 2008. In their own words:

‘Channel 4 takes an unflinching look at the increasing use of violence and weapons by young people on our nation’s streets

. Facing up to some uncomfortable truths about gun and knife crime, the season explores the effect of this disturbing trend on offenders, victims and society at large.’

Why?

Tuesday 24th Jun, 2008 in: Secondary by Lillie Jenkins

At LCET recently it’s felt like really hard work to get young people to attend the cafes and clubs we’re putting on and we’re starting to ask why? Is it something we’re doing wrong? Is it a change in youth culture? Does God have new plans for our ministry? What’s it all about? We had an opportunity to pick the brains of Brian McLaren and Gerard Kelly and see if they had any light to shed…we’d also love to hear from you!image

Adulthood Review

Monday 23rd Jun, 2008 in: Other by Tom Wade

On Friday ‘Adulthood’ the sequel to the 2006 release, ‘Kidulthood’ hit the cinema.

‘Kidulthood’ was reviewed as

“ potent as a shot of vodka before breakfast - a harrowing, uncompromisingly bleak but thoughtful look at the anguish of being young and poor in Britain.”

Does the sequel hold up and offer us a similar view of what its like to be a teenager in Britain today - and how will the young people we work with react when they see this film?

Another interesting show to check out tonight is Panorama, Primark: On The Rack, BBC1 9pm. Interesting one to keep an eye out for tonight 8pm on ITV1, Fixing Broken Britain. She looks into what lessons can be learned from the measures and how they can be applied in Britain.
